z/VM Personal User ID Password Rules
The IBM Z ISV Development Programs team remains committed to prioritize
the security of your systems.
With the implementation of z/VM 7.3 SSI, a stricter enforcement of the
existing password rules for all z/VM Personal User IDs has been
implemented. A password structure that previously may have
worked for you will no longer be accepted.
See the password rules below.
Password Rules
- Must be eight characters in length.
- Must only contain alphabetic, numeric, and national ($, # and @) characters.
- Must have at least one alphabetic and one non-alphabetic character (numeric or special characters).
- Must have the first and last characters be non-numeric.
- Cannot be reused until after at least eight iterations.
Password Examples

Invalid Passwords:
- @012345$ - Does not contain at least one alphabetic character.
- abcdefg2 - The last character is numeric.

Valid Passwords:
- @abcdefg
- abcdef2g
Important Note
Please, do not use the Valid Passwords under the Password Examples
section for your z/VM Personal User ID.
